3 ways to boost your career
You owe it to yourself to not feel stagnant in your role. You should know what you want to achieve in the next 5 or 10 years. Is it a better life for your family, a higher position, or pursuing a different role in a new industry?
CLEAR has set out some steps on how to move your career forward starting today.
- Set a goal
It is important to have a direction to walk the path easier. This means having small objectives that bring you closer to your targeted role. It’s always good practice to outline small and steady steps toward reaching your goal. You can also create an outline to give you a little push at working hard and well to get where you want to be.
- Find a mentor
There are two ways to approach this concept. First, you can either reach out to a former manager, colleague, or SME who can help you advance in your career. Mentors are good for pointing out your weaknesses and provide advice on how to overcome them.
The second approach is to find an indirect mentor who can be a social media influencer: someone you admire from LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter who has been successful in the field you are interested in pursuing. These are professional leaders who have taken the necessary steps to make a name for themselves in their career – and you can make a difference in your career as well.
- Own your career path
Remember to take advantage of performance reviews, where you discuss your career development with your manager. He/she is the best person to help assess how well or bad you are doing. And if there are any areas of improvement that you need to work on. More than your manager, you should be the first person invested in the advancement of your career.
Your manager can only help show the path, but only you can walk it.
A good place to start is always knowing what you want to achieve in your career. From there, you can work out the steps and actions to take to make your dream career a reality. You have to take charge of your career and really commit to it.
