5 Mortal Sins to Avoid Online

You’ve brought your business online because that’s where everyone is these days. In your head, once you’re here, it’s only a matter of time before everyone comes a-knocking at your virtual door asking to see your wares and services. Unfortunately that’s not the way it really works.

Putting up a business online is similar to setting one up in the real world. It takes dedication, planning, and a lot of work. Sadly though, many businesses just go at it at a haphazard manner without any kind of forethought or even a notion.

Some get lucky of course but are often unable to replicate the same success with anything else because they don’t have a clue how they did it the first time around.

Here are 5 mortal sins to avoid online:

Not investing in a mobile responsive website

We’ve all seen one, once or twice. The website looks awesome on a desktop/laptop monitor but turns ugly once viewed on a mobile device. Aesthetics aside, Google now places a high value on a site’s mobile responsiveness, which figures highly in its search rankings. We all know that the ones at the top get most of the traffic so it’s in your best interest to get as high as you can.

Not creating content for your website

Content has always been king of the search engine hill and it continues to reign even today, mobile responsiveness aside. Websites who update regularly tend to be placed higher on search than sites that don’t. Aside from this technical standpoint, people come back to a website primarily for new content (emphasis on “new”) so better get cracking on new regular content.

Not interacting with your audience

Once people start going to your site and gets comfortable, it’s only natural they’ll start talking (assuming your site allows for comments). One of the worst things you can do is to ignore them. You’re not only missing out on new ideas to improve your offerings but you’re also missing out on the opportunity to connect to your audience on a deeper level and grow your business.

Not investing on online marketing/advertising

All things considered advertising online is a hell of a lot cheaper than traditional advertising. It’s also more agile, flexible, and (best of all) measurable. You can actually do a lot with just a few dollars a week. Considering how affordable it is, even for a small startup, investing in online advertising should be a must to give your business a kickstart and get the ball rolling faster.

Ignoring Social Media

Social media has become a juggernaut as of late. Brands and businesses ignore it at their own peril. Not only is it a great place to get some eyeballs for your company and products, it is also a perfect environment to get to know your audience and, if you play your cards right, build a community around your brand. So get into social media but please be social while you’re at it.
