Tips to Become a Better and Frequent Writer
I look at my favorite writers and I wonder how they do it: churning out one article after another like a well-oiled machine. There are lots of times that I struggle and a bunch of my writer friends are also in the same boat.
Seasoned writers and bloggers have a few tips to help you be more consistent in your writing. I’ve compiled them here and I hope they will be of help to your own writing challenges.
Write often and write regularly
The strongest athletes train, gifted musicians rehearse, and talented artists…well, you get the picture. The reason why the greatest are great is because they keep practicing (and diligently at that) until those seemingly effortless skills have become second nature and muscle memory. Writers need to practice writing and they need to practice a lot.
Know where you want to go
In the case of writers, this is done through an outline. Having an outline in mind gives structure and direction to your writing making you more productive and less like to quite midway since you have a clear idea of where you’re going. It’s not as stifling as it may sound, being bound by a pre-fabricated structure. You can always change your mind since you are the author anyway.
Write first and edit last
Don’t get in your own way by editing your work as you’re writing. Not only are you more liable to lose your momentum, you’re more likely to come up with a lackluster article by second-guessing yourself. A much better process is to just write without regard for typos and grammar, concentrating instead on your piece. You can get to the editing part after you’ve fleshed it out.
Don’t be afraid to rewrite
Often, just when you’ve dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s, you realize that you’ve thought about your article all wrong and it will need some major rework. Embrace the pain my friends. Embrace it and make it yours. The only thing that matters is the work. Pain will fade, fatigue goes away, but a great article gets around with your name on it.
Read a lot then read some more
If you’re going to write a lot, you’re going to need to read as well. You’ll need it for research, reference, and (most of all) inspiration. Most writers will agree that it’s going to be pretty darn hard to write stuff without reading as well. You need to fill your head with something, filter it through your own personality, and churn it out as words before it becomes gold.
