Outsourcing is a practice used by companies to reduce costs by transferring portions of work to outside suppliers rather than completing it internally.

At the beginning it was mostly back office processes that were outsourced to third party providers specializing in such services usually located outside the client’s home country. As technology advanced and more communication and collaboration platforms emerged (and as more businesses became more used to the idea of outsourcing), other services traditionally done in-house was also outsourced.

These processes included (but not limited to) blog writing, graphic design, and marketing which begs the question: what else can you outsource these days? The simple answer is basically anything.

The question now becomes: should you outsource it?

There’s no easy answer and oftentimes it’s a case-to-case basis. I’ve come up with three guide questions to help you decide on whether or not you should outsource a particular process in your business.

Do you like or enjoy performing the task?

There are tasks that we find so tedious that we resort to procrastination and put it off until we absolutely have to deal with it. If such is the case, these tasks are better off outsourced leaving you with the ones that you actually do enjoy performing.

Are you the only person able to do it?

As a general rule, businesses should only outsource the generic and non-critical tasks of their operations while keeping their core business process in-house though again, this should be on a case-to-case basis and thoroughly though out first.

Is it part of your business’ core activity?

Ideally you only outsource your business’ non-critical process, meaning those tasks that are not essential to your operation. By outsourcing the non-critical parts, you’re able to focus on your core business and become more efficient.

If you answered “no” to all three questions then chances are you can successfully outsource the task without much trouble.
